When a vehicle is being towed it cannot operate its own lights. The diodes are a gateway with 2 inputs and one output. One input is the regular wiring on the vehicle. The other input is from the RV. Since vehicles being flat towed will not have working lights they will have to get power to function from the RV. This to me sounds like a ground problem. It sounds like your tail lights function until the additional load of having the head lights of your vehicle are turned on and then the lights cut out.
The reason this manifested after the vehicle swap could be a lower voltage output of your latest vehicle. Either way I would check the grounds on the tail lights of your vehicle and make sure they are making a good connection to a clean metal surface.

The first thing you are going to want to check is if running light power is making it all the way back to the diodes installed on your 2001 Chevy S-10. You would do this by connecting the truck to the back of the RV (or other vehicle you are using) and turn the running lights on on the tow vehicle. Then use a circuit tester such as # PTW2993 if you need one. If there is no power on the input wire from the RV/tow vehicle, then the issue is somewhere ahead of the diode.

The reason that this is important is because the total amp draw for each circuit on both the trailer and light bar cannot exceed that of the vehicle's trailer lighting circuits. As long at the center pin of the 7-Way connector on your tow vehicle receives power when you put the vehicle in reverse then auxiliary backup lights will light up automatically when you put the vehicle in reverse.

Some vehicles have day time running lights that are on all the time which would be similar to having the vehicle running lights activated.
